My Project
I would like to use these materials in my band classes. Improvisation is a great skill that any musician should have and it is a great stepping stone into talking about the world of jazz music. A looper pedal would help us have a good harmonic foundation so then we could work on our improvisatory skills and exploration of melody. The students in my band classes come from all backgrounds and levels of music proficiency. They have recently expressed an interest in learning about jazz since we have so many advancing clarinet and saxophone players. (which is awesome!)
Since jazz is rooted in improvisation, students will learn creativity, critical thinking and quick decision making.
These skills will help them outside of the music class as well. We are in need of more reads for our saxophone players and some classroom decor to help bringing awareness to all the different kinds of music, but especially jazz. Right now we do not have anything up inside the classroom, so I would like to make it a nicer learning environment. We can do some recording with the looper and then practice improvising both melodic and rhythmic creations. This project will help all students of the band, not just the wind players. Everyone will also learn a bit about American history and all the other genres that came out of Jazz.
