Implementing Independence in an Autistic Classroom
Help me give my students access to materials at their own level. These materials will allow me to customize each child's learning for their own individual developmental level in my severe non-verbal autistic classroom.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hi everyone! I’m a Special Education teacher with a fun-loving group of non-verbal kids at a multitude of different levels in a high poverty area. New materials are required for my severe, intensive classroom to support their diverse range of abilities. Our school is new to the Level 3 Autism program, and I need several new supplies to support our students through this curriculum.
Each request holds significant value in improving my student’s independence and will be reusable every year.
Teachers Pay Teachers gift cards would allow diverse learning materials, projects and activities to be purchased, providing personal lessons for my students that can cater to their needs. Due to the hands-on nature of my classroom: Velcro and laminating sheets are required to set up and maintain student activities.
Velcro is used to attach activities within each students’ folders, with each activity being laminated to withstand student play. The colorful file folders will be used as individual folders for each student. These folders will contain their variety of engaging activities for the day, allowing them to navigate such tasks on their own. Finally, binders, sheet protectors, and a colorful bin set will allow for safe keeping of student work and materials throughout the year. Bins let each student keep materials in their own space with their own access while the binders and sheet protectors will give a space to hold activities for each student.
Every item is essential for students’ own journey and will provide them with the means necessary to gain independence throughout their learning achievements. With this ability to individually provide for students, independence can be curated within the classroom as this exciting new set up will allow my kids to have repetition and frequent review of the skills necessary to be a successful member of our school community and society.
