My Students

Do you remember when your teachers would tell you it was time to read a new book in class? You probably thought, "Oh brother." The book The Immortal Cells of Henrietta Lacks explores scientific discovery while following Lacks and her family from a small town in Virginia to Baltimore.

I teach Biology in a public urban high school in Maryland.

About 75% of the students that attend the school receive free and reduced price lunch. My classes are made of mostly 11th graders who are taking Biology to meet a graduation requirement. In my current classes 34% of the students are either in the special education or english language learner program. It is OK to say that most of my students won't read unless required to for class if they are not reading a blog or magazine. I believe this book can spark interest in science.

My Project

While reading The Immortal Cells of Henrietta Lacks the students will be able to reflect on each chapter. In their reflection they will share what they learned, and show connections between what was learned in class and what was read. When they have finished reading the book they will complete a project. For the project they will write a letter to either Henrietta Lacks, Henrietta Lacks' family, or a research scientist. In the letter they will share what they have learned by reading the book, draw connections between class concepts and information discussed in the book, and tell how they feel about research studies using poor and uneducated participants.

As the state of Maryland prepares for Common Core Standards reading The Immortal Cells of Henrietta Lacks will increase literacy in my class.

Increasing the chances to help students improve their literacy skills will aide in preparing them for college. Also I am hoping the book will inspire my students to become more interested in science and science careers by sparking interest in the scientific discovery process. Thank you for your support!
