My Students

The mind is the greatest natural resource. This project has the potential to allow gifted students with reading deficiencies to acquire greater vocabulary through the immersion reading software.

Gifted children are sometimes misunderstood through their label as being fully capable or extremely talented or even misrepresented in discussions as, "The smart child who does not need any help" because they will just understand it anyway you explain it to them.

Gifted children have their extreme highs and lows just like every other child. Several have hyper sensitivities (sounds, sights, scents, touch and tastes). The twice exceptional gifted can be from impoverished homes or gifted with a learning deficit or both. These students with reading disabilities (or deficits) can have the playing field at least somewhat leveled through technology in the classroom.

My Project

One example is the Immersion Reading program. This program (offered only through the Kindle Fire HD) highlights and reads the text as the author speaks it. A child with a high intellect that is complicated by a reading disability (such as dyslexia) is given the freedom to follow along and see the individual words read by a professional actor (not a computerized voice) that helps to further capture their attention and thus, lend a better chance for them to master advanced vocabulary due to the added exposure to novels they might never have attempted without the read along companion provided by Immersion Reading.

A large percentage of top graduates never pursue a college education and out of those that do, a hefty percentage of them leave with a pile of debt and no degree.

Whether it is the vocabulary encountered or the amount of reading involved in a college setting... they leave and never return. This may not be the complete answer to helping all of these special students, but if it can help some, perhaps they will be the some that help some and so on.
