How do you remember your days of school? Was it in a sterile environment with plain walls, rows of desks, and a teacher in front of the room? A typical day in our room is nothing like that. I work hard to create a warm inviting themed room for my students to look forward to coming to each day.
We have three classes each made up of 28 wonderfully unique, racial mixed boys and girls in Arkansas totaling 84 students.
They attend a Title I school, which means there is a high enough percentage of free and reduced-price lunch to qualify. Most of our school is an "open classroom" concept, which is very unique as there are no full walls separating the classrooms. These ten and eleven-year-old students are very eager learners; they are like sponges, absorbing all the information and experiences and keep on wanting more.
Students need to be immersed in great literature that will get their minds constantly thinking. They need to be filled with amazement and hear rich language from different authors. Children need to ask questions and make predictions as good readers. Theirs minds need to wonder about what is going to happen next.
The school day has been filled up with all kinds of other "things" that need to be taught, and I want to bring back the simple yet powerful act of reading aloud rich children's literature.
These books such as Maybe a Fox, Summer Lost, and Beyond the Bright Sea will help me foster a love for reading in our classroom as my students hear beautiful language and stories that will impact them for the rest of their lives.
