Imagining an Innovative Maker Space - STEP II: Seating!

My students need functional, flexible and comfortable seating in the form of carpets to create a positive and creative learning environment.

My Students

The students of TCEA are creative, innovative and resourceful. They are Kindergarten-8th grade, and come from extremely diverse social and economic backgrounds. They travel from 6 counties to reach school every day. TCEA is a free public charter school, Title I, and 51% of our students qualify for the free/reduced lunch program. K-5th grade students all attend Visual Art, in addition to Music, Dance, Theatre, and STEAM. 6-8th students attend Visual Art as an elective. All students work with Visual Art in arts integration unit and projects that vary throughout the year.

My Project

I am on a mission this school year to create a flexible, open space that will improve student learning and fun! If your student has ever said the visual art room is cramped or too small, complained about tripping, pinching a finger between two chairs or not fitting in the room - well, they were right. Now those days are now over! This is possible because my amazing TCEA administration team agreed to rip out the counter taking up massive space in the middle of the room, opening up space in the art room! In addition, administration funded building up of the walls, dropping ceilings and painting the art wing. Donors Choose donors funded kidney activity tables in only a week, allowing me to move onto phase 2 of this project!

This new maker space will benefit many students for years to come!

We are now seeking funding funding for the carpets that will allow for movement, classroom management, and flexible, comfortable seating to inspire creativity and imagination. Research shows that students who are able to move and be comfortable learn more and have less behavior issues. These carpets will create a comfortable work space for independent projects when combined with easels and drawing boards. They also function as centers and direction for the various age groups I teach, allowing easier transitions and movement throughout the room for centers, small groups, whole-group learning and adapt easily to flipping the art studio for different grade levels.

This project is based on:

1) My own assessment after 3 years of teaching in this room

2) On student surveys and feedback that target the room itself as an area for improvement

3) Research on flexible seating
