This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a school where nearly all of them come from low-income backgrounds, some of whom are homeless, but that does not stop them from finding ways to grow as people and give back to their community. They are a lively group that have so much energy to spend. They are creative, and I love seeing them focus their energy into their learning and using their creativity to collaborate and solve problems both in the classroom and their community.
My students are capable of amazing things and they are a community of civic-minded future leaders.
Living in the inner city is not easy, and they have historically been offered less. I am humbled to be a part of a school that does so much to offer them more, and I am appreciative of the opportunities to give them access to all that they deserve.
My Project
I have requested deodorant, sanitary napkins, toothbrushes, and instant meals like Pace Steak Rice and Beans that will help my students, some of whom struggle with homelessness, or simply not having a home of their own. We always think of homeless children as being that kid that does not have a place to lay their head indoors at night, but what we do not consider is the kid that is couch surfing and making their way from couch to couch in a place they will not remember tomorrow.
Homelessness can look different from case to case, but imagine you are a kid that starts your first day in middle school and everyone wants to talk about how you smell instead of how well you draw.
Imagine you are a kid starting middle school and people say hateful things about wishing you were homeless, not knowing that you slept in a house belonging to someone else because you do not know how long you will be here. Like John Lennon said "Imagine" and maybe then we will see, we will see how much the world can change by living in shoes that have tread harder than we can comprehend.
