Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a group of kindergarten students who are both learning English and developing along a continuum of standards that allow us to maintain and compete with the uniform expectations of a highly performing state.
Kindergarten is such an exciting time filled with mixed interests, abilities, and goals.
Some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while some of their classmates are learning to imitate sounds or hold a paintbrush. Our group loves to play outside, learn new games, and devlop skills that will allow us to be succesful for the rest of our lives.
In this class, we build a community around what we have in common and our shared experiences. We learn to respect each other for our similarities and our differences and grow together to be productive, proactive, and critical thinkers.
My Project
Purposeful play allows kindergarten students to build on their social skills and create life long understandings of how it is we interact with one another. These skills are important to the development of every student as many studies have shown the improved reading levels and math scores of children who develop social understandings and coping skills in the primary grades. This is the reason I am asking for play kitchen items and toys kids can use with blocks to construct from their imagination.
Along with play, students need exposure to many highly engaging texts.
These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy-I read on the carpet to them, they complete work there, and they read independently! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind- I have asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time and foster a sense of independence and community.
