it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a 1st grade, title 1, public school classroom; with a primarily ELL population. All students are on free breakfast and lunch. I'm a Disney fanatic and my classroom is entirely Mickey and Minnie Mouse themed. I like to make a fun environment for my kiddos, being back in the classroom has been a challenge with limited resources. The kiddos love to share about their lives and make me laugh on a daily basis. I average 16 students, that look forward to learning to read on a daily basis.
My Project
In 1st grade students are just learning to read. I am looking for books below, and at grade level in order to help students read at their level as well as challenge their ability to read a little above their levels. The more students read the better their fluency becomes which is the goal of 1st grade; not only getting them to read words but to become more fluent in reading them. This would support my students now and in the future.
Most of my students have never been to school before; due to the pandemic.
I have found many of them have a hard time sitting still and focusing on instruction. I currently have them moving between the carpet and their chairs most of the day to give them some variability. The wobble chairs and bouncy balls support students in focusing on their work and instruction.
