My Students
My occupational therapy students are motivated, engaged, and curious students whose developmental delays inhibit their ability to independently participate in daily classroom routines and activities. These challenges can affect them in a variety of ways, including fine motor development, visual-perceptual development, hand-eye coordination, handwriting development, sensory processing abilities, and difficulties with attention.
My students love to showcase the skills they learn in the therapy room during their classroom work.
I have found that the best way for my students to learn a new skill is to practice it across a variety of mediums. This might include a developmental game, arts and crafts, gross motor play, obstacle courses, imaginary play, sensory exploration, and direct practice with a functional skill. Many of my students do not get the opportunity to practice these skills outside of the school day which makes the time we spend together in the therapy room that much more important!
My Project
We are requesting basic arts and craft supplies and materials to support the development of fine motor skills, creativity, and imagination. Through the use of these tools, my students will have the opportunity to learn how to cut with scissors, will learn to color and draw using various sized and shaped crayons, markers, and pencils, and will develop grip strength and pencil grasp using Play-Doh and Play-Doh tools.
Research has shown that children learn faster, and retain skills longer when they learn through play.
The use of these tools and supplies will allow my students to develop basic fine motor skills through the use of creativity, play, and imagination. The development of these skills will allow my occupational therapy students to participate in classroom activities, keep up with their peers in the classroom, and be independent throughout the school day.
