My Project
Many of my students receive special education services and they all receive meals and snacks while at school. My students need a lot of repetition to meet their academic needs. My students are reluctant to try new things. They are constantly asking for someone to sit next to them and they need a lot of attention and praise. My students are thriving in a play-based Math center with a vet pet theme. Adding another element to play-based learning; a puppet stage in the literacy center will teach many concepts in grammar, story elements, vocabulary, and social skills.
Providing students with hand puppets in our literacy and writing center will provide repetition and concrete learning in many skills for reading comprehension: story element, tone, climax, problem-solution, and vocabulary.
Adding hand puppets to my literacy and writing center will teach many concepts: helping them recognize when to use quotation marks in dialogue, ending punctuation, and proper sentence structure.
When students play with puppets they are repeating elements of a story reinforcing characters, setting, plot, climax, and problem-solution. Students will be engaged and will take ownership of their learning.
Each puppet has its own unique personality and character. When students create their own story they will develop personal expressions and tone. When a teacher gives them a play or story to read from a book students will apply skills from the puppet stage to a textbook or fluency passage. Students will have a firm foundation in tone, fact, opinion, and many other reading concepts.
As students play with characters they will expand their vocabulary. Astronaut hand puppets will add planets, oxygen, force, and momentum to their vocabulary. These hand puppets will allow students to own their learning through literacy play-based learning.
