This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A 21st century learning environment invites my students to invest in their learning. Help to provide engaging technology in our classroom by supporting this awesome project!

My amazing 9th graders come from all over the city and most of them are eligible for free lunch.

While many of my students have had lackluster science experiences in middle school, they are already fluent in social technologies. They use Facebook, Twitter, and their texting thumbs are faster than my ten typing fingers put together. However, becoming interested in science class is often difficult for my students because it is so seemingly disconnected from their very social adolescent lives. Tapping into their excitement about technology helps them to see themselves in science. Doing hands-on investigations in a tech-forward, 21st Century science learning environment is helping me to build a bridge that my students want to cross.

My Project

I am requesting three iMac desktop computers. Instead of using static diagrams to learn about the phases of the moon, my students will create stop motion videos to explain the phenomenon. They will post these on their Wikispaces and discuss each others work online. Instead of only reading about human impact on the environment, my students will also use iMovie to edit their video interviews of local fish market owners to ascertain how the effects of the Gulf Oil Spill have reached as far as our city. Instead of creating a public awareness poster campaign only in the halls of our school, my students will use digital imagery, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and the web to create an online awareness campaign. The Internet has helped me to provide a larger audience for my students and their work, which has raised the stakes and pushed them to create higher quality, more beautiful work than ever before. This mixture of pressure and pride is a winning formula for my students

It's hard to imagine a future workplace without computers.

My own skills from a previous career in graphic design are helping me to connect my students to the real world of high-tech creative work, which is exciting for them and helps them to envision themselves as productive adults. Donors like yourself have already brought the Internet into to my classroom. This has revolutionized the way my students approach school. Funding this project will help to take their learning to the next level.
