This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My middle school is categorized as one of the lower performing schools in the county and is in need of extra support and assistance for our students, who all experience high levels of poverty, violence, and educational inequity.
The majority of my students will either be the first or in the first generation of their families to attend college.
Statistically, African Americans, boys, and students whose parents had less education were more likely to be suspended or expelled. Students who prepared more for their classes, spent more hours on homework, and aspired to higher academic achievement were less likely to be disciplined at school. Helping students engage in school may be protective against disproportionate school discipline. Only 27% of them will graduate college within four years (compared to 42% of students whose parents graduated from college). But not our students—we all aspire to go to college.
My students will benefit from this iMac in that we will use it for everything! I plan to use it for course planning, parent/student communication, maintaining a course website, creating and presenting content in the classroom, grading and record keeping, etc. During this time my students are learning virtually with many technological issues on both of ends.
My current computer is not capable of housing everything I need to present an engaging and successful virtual lesson to make sure my students do not fall behind in content.
My students will directly benefit from this desktop through the images, maps, videos, and up-to-the-minute information that having access to technology and internet in the classroom provides. Once students are back in the building, I plan to use the iMac for a STEM station for students. With an iMac my students will be exposed to new technology that will impact their learning in a positive way. An iMac's operating life is at least five years. Thus thousands of students may be potentially impacted in meaningful ways through your donations and the fulfillment of this request.
