I'm Bringing Social Back! Board Games instead of Chromebook Time!

My Project

Sometimes, we ALL need a break after some hard work at school. This past school year, my students looked forward to an occasional "Free Day Friday", where they would be allowed to read a book, draw, or use their Chromebooks for listening to music, playing games, or watching school appropriate videos.

Even though my students looked forward to and enjoyed "Free Day Friday" in class, I realized that they were being rewarded with the very thing that many have become addicted to: "screen time".

With cell phones or other technology never being much farther than an arms length away, many students today are lacking social skills, and because of what social media has done to our society, they can also lack empathy for one another because of how impersonal their "relationships" with others have become.

My students crave entertainment, but I'm hopeful that creating opportunities for that through board games and card games instead of individual screen time on their Chromebooks will allow the students to further develop their problem solving skills, learn success and failure, and many other useful life skills, all while having fun creating some new memories and hopefully creating some new friendships!
