Each day, after my student's enter the classroom and wipe down their freshly disinfected chairs and tabletops, they power up their Chromebooks to login to my Google Classroom page to see what's on the daily agenda for Science class. Each day, I'm met with the same repeating phrase from each of my classes, "Mr. Anderson, it says there's no wifi." Our unreliable internet connection on campus has led to so many issues, from students being unable to login into their Chromebooks and access their classwork, to Google Docs not being able to automatically save the student's work, resulting in everything that they've worked on during class being lost and unretrievable. Right now, I have 10 students who have become 100% virtual learners for the next 14 days due to a mandatory quarantine. About half of those students do not have access to internet at home, either due to financial reasons, their location, or both. I could go on forever, but to sum it up, many of our students are from low-income families in our very rural town who have already been financially strained due to the effects of the coronavirus on their employment and childcare needs. I believe that providing each student with a flash drive will allow them to continue completing their classwork while at home and/or under the unreliable internet connection we have while on campus. The students will be able to download their upcoming work to the flash drive from a Google Drive folder that I'll create and continue working on their assignments offline until the time comes to submit it online. Please consider helping out our students, teachers, and parents during these crazy times that we're living in! Thank you and God bless!
