My Students

I'm bringing playtime back! Our recess is, in a word, chaotic. Our school has 700 children sharing one playground. There is limited space + equipment which leads to fighting over the few options available and/or injuries from running all around without structured activities to focus on.

My students are from a variety of different economic backgrounds, different cultures, and different types of families and all different academic levels.

We are, let's say, an eclectic group. I've taught at 4 schools in our county and this group of kids stands out from all the rest. They are amazingly compassionate, eager to learn, fun, and proud. A couple of years ago a new administration came into our "D" rated school and turned it into a focused, cohesive and loving family. We proudly have been an "A" or "B" school with our students buying into the new school spirit. They went from wearing pants sagging down, to adhering to a "tucked in" dress code. They used to roll in tardy regularly (if at all), and now show up on time, eager to learn. Home lives remain the same though. Many of our students don't have the role models to teach them how to deal with their frustration. They just react. For them, this team/character building playtime is as crucial as their classroom time.

My Project

First and foremost, my job is to keep the children safe. Right now, our playground has too many children and not enough activities for them to do. I feel that with some more structured play such as tossing a Frisbee, jump roping, and playing catch, they will be less likely to injure themselves or others on the playground. The swings fill up fast and the slides lose their allure very quickly so there are kids everywhere just running all around. Our children need and want organized games at recess for good physical and social development. The Ball's Eye hand mitts are specific to helping students improve the hand eye coordination. Every year my class has at least one student with physical limitations that could benefit from the versatility and gross motor practice that comes with big intrinsic rewards. The Velcro pad provides a large target that almost ensures success every time they go to catch a ball, improving their self esteem too!

Think of the skills you use daily in your workplace and home.

Do they involve being considerate, sharing, persevering, showing good sportsmanship, offering and accepting help when needed, and yes..even the occasional "Do over"? If so, you probably learned many of those life lessons on the playground. Children need to develop social and physical skills in organized play working as a team. Help supply us with the tools for us to capitalize on every teachable moment the school day has to offer.
