I work in a large urban school district as a proud teacher of 110 physics students who are passionate about education and going to college. They are dedicated to working hard and show it every day by staying an extra hour at school and also commit to an extended school year which keeps them in school till July and starts up in early August. It is a privilege to work with my students and I am determined to help them achieve their higher education aspirations and prepare them the best way I know how.
Many of my students do not have access to computers at home. Last year I did a survey and only 40% had a home computer and only 50% of them were connected to the internet. The kids depend mostly on the local library system for their internet access. The state cut funding to the libraries which may cause closing of branches and limiting of hours. This will be devastating for the students.
I would like to accumulate a class set of laptops that the students would have access to in class and after school hours. We are lucky enough to have a wireless network so that they would have internet access too. I would also use open source software that is free so the students could get comfortable with it and then utilize it at home.
The laptops would be used daily during class time for paperless quizzes that I would set up online. They would also be used for virtual physics labs that could supplement the lab materials we have. One lab would teach the students about nuclear physics and another would have them calculate the acceleration due to gravity. These are two examples but the online resource of virtual labs is endless!
I stay typically 2 hours everyday after school. I would make the laptops available for applying to college, classwork needs, and applying for scholarships. Many of my students will be first generation college students, so they need assistance with the intimidating application processes.
By funding this proposal, you will be filling a huge technology gap in my classroom. My students need exposure to 21st century computing, and with the dwindling funding in our local libraries, their access is disappearing. This will be the first of a series of proposals needed to get a class set, but hopefully with the generosity of donors like you we can have one by the end of the academic year!
