My Students

Do you remember the first time you read a book that you didn't want to put down? I believe that reading has a lasting impact on my students. It is my desire to help increase their love of literature by exposing them to some of the most memorable literary works of all time. Reading is like breathing.

My students and I live in a beautiful historic city.

Or school is located in the heart of the Historic District. My students have developed my passion for the written word. New books are "snatched" off the shelf before my initials dry on the cover. It it almost impossible to keep up with their reading appetite. It is my desire to introduce my students to some of the great literary works. Books come and go, but some remain forever ingrained in our minds. I want to create literature circles which require class sets. I want books my students can relate to. These books will forever be embedded in their hearts, their minds, and the depths of their soul.

My Project

My students need additional copies of 145th Street Short Stories, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Copper Sun as well as a new beanbag chair. My classroom is warm and inviting. Students can sit in their desk, a comfortable "butterfly" chair, bean bag sprawled across the floor, or anywhere their heart desires. Adding comfort to our learning environment is important. In addition, these resources will provoke critical thinking while increasing student vocabulary development and skills, comprehension, foster creativity and writing. They will also allow me the opportunity to increase student achievement by designing lessons that correspond with the selected literature. I have a passion for reading that was instilled in me by a teacher. I believe that this project will have a major impact on the lives of my students. Moreover, the resources requested are some of the literary classics of all times. Every child should read timeless pieces like "To Kill a Mockingbird," while relaxing in a comfortable bean bag chair. Books like 145th Street short stories give students an antipathy look at cultural diversity.

This project is critical to our success.

Children tend to read more when books are readily available. Growing my classroom library guarantees my students success in all of their academic subjects. Studies show that students who read frequently excel in all subjects. By building comprehension skills I am providing a critical foundation for success in school and life.
