My Students
I am a teacher in an urban school located in Jersey City, New Jersey. Each and every one of my students is extremely special to me. They are all bright, charismatic children who will one day make an extreme impact in this world.
Many of my students come from broken homes and low-socio-economic backgrounds.
I have students who lack the basic necessities every child should have such as food and their own bed. Many of my children come to school extremely hungry because they ate a sugary bowl of cereal for dinner the previous night. Many of my children come to school exhausted because it's difficult to share a bedroom with three younger brothers and sisters in a cramped apartment.
It is my goal to end the achievement gap by giving my students the educational tools and encouragement they need to be successful enough to build a life of their own..a life entirely different than the one they have grown up knowing.
My Project
My students LOVE technology! They instantly become engaged when there is a computer or iPad involved...and you know how hard it is to keep the attention of a 7 year old!
What better way to keep a 7 year old engaged than holding technology in their own hands?
Here are just some ways iPads would help the learners in my classroom:
~Books read aloud to students for them to follow along (using apps such as Tales2Go and Bookster)
~Phonemic Awareness (using apps dedicated to phonics skills such as Hip Hop Hen, Reading Rockets, and ABC Kids)
~Math (using apps such as Marble Math Junior, Crazy Times Tables) to challenge my high-level learners, and to use as extra support for my low-level learners
~Science exploration and STEM activities (using apps such as BrainPOP Jr and Complexity Science)
