Each school day, over 100 students enter the art room. They often smile as they approach the door, amused by my paint covered apron, and curious how a single paint brush creates my up-do. My students are eager to pick up a paintbrush, model clay, and they welcome just about any task that involves making a mess! They face new challenges with confidence and enthusiasm, seeking self-expression through various art media. My students are energized by new materials and techniques. They crave experimentation, and enjoy sharing their “A-Ha!” moments with peers.
My students are the future, they will become cultural contributors, innovators and positive change agents.
It is my passion for the arts that drives me to instill a genuine appreciation for the arts in each and every student. The art room a safe space, ripe with collaboration and hands-on activities. I strive to secure a creative environment, equipped with proper tools and facilities, to enhance the learning experience. I work diligently to remove the barriers that stifle creativity by providing a learning environment that promotes experimentation and celebrates individual growth.
My Project
The Graphic Arts course at NHS is in high demand. Each year I have more students requesting to enroll than we have computers. We would like to increase the number of devices to match the number of students. We are hoping to add three Apple iPads and three Apple Pencils. Currently, in Graphic Arts, we cover the design principles and graphic design best practices, and we are looking to expand the coursework to include digital painting and illustration. We are focused on creating a STEAM program that illuminates the intersection of art and technology.
With the new technology, students may unleash their creativity and produce expressive illustrations.
The iPads will allow students to access a variety of drawing and illustration applications which can be used with the Apple Pencil. The Apple Pencil transforms digital painting into a hands-on experience. Currently, students struggle with creating digital illustrations using a computer mouse, and often feel limited by the lack of technology. They have requested access to a tablet and stylus to enhance their learning experience and elevate their designs.
This technology will also provide students with the opportunity to explore industry standards, design process, and printer output techniques. Students will be challenged to transfer their digital masterpieces onto a variety of substrates, including canvas, silkscreen, and vinyl. This technology expands the artistic palette into the digital realm, and aims to support the acquisition of a marketable skill set.
