My Students

"A picture is worth a thousand words" hadn't always meant much to me until I saw my students discover graphic novels. The level of engagement, especially for my struggling readers has skyrocketed through the roof, making the demand for the books skyrocket too!

My students are amazing.

My students are excited. My students are inspiring. As students in Baltimore, MD, you're probably thinking that they are the ones that need inspiration, but after learning their stories, celebrating their successes, and watching them develop into the incredible kids they are, it's easy to see why I am the one inspired. They know the odds are not always stacked in their favor, yet they rise to the challenge daily, exceeding our school's expectations, and setting new ones for themselves. It's evident in the warm culture in our classrooms, the encouragement students give to each other, and the way they smile every morning as we greet them with handshakes and invite them to start the day. Where they were is nothing compared to where they will be, and I'm lucky to have the opportunity to work with them.

My Project

In our second unit, we will be reading Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. These books will first prepare my kids by introducing them to some of the major Greek deities. The stories of the Greek gods that influence Percy on his journey is critical background knowledge that will enrich the experience of reading Percy Jackson. Normally, we don't think of picture books as a middle school resource, but what graphic novels do for all readers, but especially struggling readers, is that it allows them to understand and connect with the story in different ways.

The experience of reading, understanding, and connecting is what I work towards all year long.

Books like these give that experience in ways that I can't explain. To a student that feels outmatched by the sheer number of pages in a novel, these books will offer an alternative to needing a buddy reader. To a student that wants to see what he has been envisioning chapter-by-chapter, these books offer a quick view of the action. This donation will invite them into the wonder and joy of reading.
