My Project
This year we are focusing our dance educational study on "Astro," anything and everything dealing with stars, planets, moon(s), astrology, galaxies, black holes, gravity, etc. Each dance in our spring dance concert will educate our audience on an aspect of space that dance students have studied, researched, and translated into movement. We will bring the wonder, the awe, the mystery, and the intrigue of our universe to the stage. Our spring dance concert, "Astro," will take our audience into space, and explore the universe, through original and creative movement, primarily choreographed by our student dancers!
In this particular piece, students will use a flashlight to explore the ways they can "illuminate" themselves and others, while accentuating movement, through the use of lighting.
Just as the stars and moon illuminate the earth, dancers will use the light of the flashlight to discover the different ways light can be utilized to draw attention to movement.
Dance provides an outlet for not only creative and artistic expression, but emotional expression. As students are taught to explore and discover new and interesting ways to move their body and express ideas through movement and the elements of dance, students are also able to better connect with themselves, their own emotions, ideas, and experiences as well as to their peers, their community, the world around them, and the universe as a whole.
Students cultivate and increase their mind-body connection through the unique combination of athleticism and artistry that dance requires, and educate others to do the same through performance. As students study the choreographic process and create their own original movement to compose dance pieces, students learn how to translate meaning into movement; exploring the vocabulary of their body and discovering the meaning and expression behind movement, which is then shared with their audience.
