My students need 2 iPads to promote learning. We encourage technology, but don't have much to offer.

My Students
I work in a very low socio-economic school and most of our students do not have an opportunity to learn with the new technology out there. I would like to give them the opportunity to explore the world outside their community through the use of technology.
My students are very enthusiastic about learning but haven't had many life experiences.
Most of them have never been out of the city. The majority of my students are on free and reduced lunch. I want them to be able to explore outside of TN through the use of technology that their families cannot afford. My students attend a very small, neighborhood school with limited resources. We are a very low performing school with very little parental support. In fact our school scored so poorly we are in jeopardy of being taken over. I know we can turn this school around if we had innovative resources. Many of our students have a defeated mentality too early in life and are very angry, but they are open to possibilities and believe their teachers can give them more.
My Project
I am trying to build up technology in my classroom. I want to eventually have a class set of ten iPad minis to use for reading and math in centers, in groups and individually to aid learning. There are so many hands-on activities we will be able to dive into with the access of technology. Most of our students will never hold an iPad unless it's in school. One activity we will do is time travel. A teacher in our school created a cool time machine that students were able to go in and with her personal iPad inside, they were able to go back in time to see slide shows and articles on people in black history in February and women in women's history in March. Through this time travel they can learn about the Civil Rights and Women's Rights movements. We can play our part in helping the environment by using e-books. There are so many educational apps created to help with sight word recognition and math facts fluency. Using technology makes it more exciting for the students.
My project is important because I tell them daily that nothing can stop you from achieving your goals.
Not even your economic background. If you set your mind to something you can do it and we have set a goal to get 10 iPad minis in our classroom. Having two is a great start for students who have never seen one. We hope that if we get started we can show its benefit to write grants to purchase several class sets for our school.
