This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
".. one benefit of information technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It lets people learn things they didn't think they could learn before... it is all about potential." Steve Ballmer.
I want to maximize potential
My students are in the 4th grade.
They live in a predominantly low-income, Hispanic neighborhood in a large city. The students come to my classroom from other classrooms to learn in a smaller group environment. There are about 16 students who come to learn reading, writing and math. The students are very respectful and eager to learn. My students enjoy interactive, fun, and creative projects. They love reading and doing projects. They are all in the 4th grade special education program. The majority of them have learning disabilities and struggle to learn and retain information and skills. They are all hard working, bright children who just need extra practice when learning something new and learn best through interactive and engaging activities.
My Project
My students will become better writers, readers and increase math achievement through daily use of the iPad minis. They will be able to use them during interactive centers in reading and math. The ways they will be using the iPads is countless, but here are a few examples: to record and write stories, to improve spelling through the use of interactive apps, to improve reading sight words, comprehension and fluency rates. The will be able to use apps that increase their number sense, retention of multiplication facts and give them access to an innumerable amount of math manipulatives. The students will also be able to use the iPads to access the Internet in order to do things such as deepen their understanding of a topic through research or to access reading and math intervention websites.
I work with a specific population of students that particularly benefit from visual and interactive learning.
I have found, through experience and research, that incorporating technology such as iPads into the classroom can vastly increase student achievement and engagement. In addition, I work in a low-income area where the majority of students do not have access to the latest technology. If this project is funded my students will have the same opportunities as their same-aged peers.
