This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"At the heart of effective technology integration, technology offers opportunities to be more actively involved in the learning experience." -- Vanessa Vega, Edutopia
I believe that the best way to integrate core skills into technology is through hands-on experiences!
My students are 19 of the most diverse children I've known.
They come from many different cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds, and family units, but they have one thing in common: their chances at success. Throughout my school district, more than 65 different languages are spoken at home. In my classroom, the most prominent language is Spanish, and I try to integrate language as much as possible for the students.
We are a part of a magnet school that focuses on the Bank Street model - learning through hands-on experiences and inquiry. My students are so curious, and they love to explore any given task. This year, my class focused on centers and as a result, they love to be in small groups, working with friends. We really have placed a strong emphasis on literacy this year, and my class is really showing growth! Their favorite thing to do in centers, by far, is reading and doing math games on the iPads that our school provides!
My Project
Currently, my school provides iPads for the First Grade to use during centers. Each classroom receives 4-5 iPads to use while the kids are working independently during our reader's workshop. Unfortunately, the strong demands of computer-based testing have forced the technology specialist to remove the iPads from our classroom, for testing purposes.
We spent a good portion of the year without iPads for centers as a result, and my students really felt the difference. We use research-based programs for intervention on our iPads, and without the materials, the interventions we put in place are not nearly as effective. My goal is to eventually have five class iPads funded, which I can keep in the classroom year-round.
We need an iPad, screen protector, and case for their technology center during reading and math. The opportunity for my students to use these on a daily basis is invaluable, and my hope is that they will significantly raise the achievement of those students who are struggling readers, as well as challenge those students who are on or above grade level.
My students deserve as many opportunities for success as they can possibly receive.
This project will allow them to have constant technology in the classroom, and access to programs that have been scientifically proven to provide excellent results. My students need to be actively involved in the learning process, and with a society that places such a high emphasis on technology, they need an early start toward success.
