Mrs. Lavin from Oakland CA is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need to engage with technology by using an iPad and 2 LeapPad Reading Devices to help them become college ready!

Each day, the digital divide between my scholars and their more affluent peers grows. In a classroom with aging desktop computers, my scholars are unable to use technology to create, investigate, and learn. In order to be college ready, my scholars must become technologically savvy.
Our school culture is one where college admittance is certain.
Our classrooms are named after colleges that we teachers attended and successfully graduated from. All of our students are at-risk and are statistically less-likely to graduate from high school than any other demographic. While our test scores and percentage of student mastery are high, we do not have the resources to provide our students the skill sets to become technologically literate. These children deserve to have an equal opportunity to be exposed to different career paths and learning styles through use of programs on an iPad and Leap Pads.
At a recent barbecue with friends, I watched a two-year old independently type in a pass-code then navigate her way through an iPad screen to access a painting application. She was able to use all the tools without ever asking her mom or dad to help her. To say I was amazed is an understatement. On my drive home, I imagined what it would be like to have my scholars use iPads throughout the day. The possibilities are limitless: pre-teaching vocabulary or standards, reviewing content through media, accessing hundreds of free-apps that would engage my students in writing practice, number recognition, science and art, and utilizing recording devices to practice fluency or record small projects and videos.
By accessing these devices in their Kindergarten year, my students will be more prepared to engage in an ever-changing technological society, equipping them to have necessary skills to become engineers, doctors, mathematicians, or scientists.
