My Project
While I enjoy going into classrooms to present guidance lessons, everything starts at home. My office is my home away from home and ideally a place of safety for students and staff alike. Being equipped with tissues to dry tears, wipes to clean faces, and seating that houses stuffed animals used for comforting and calming are all important.
Maintaining a clean, sanitary, safe space with sensory items to soothe the dysregulated mind is invaluable.
I once had a student run away from his classroom;' everyone was on alert and searching for him. We separated and went hall by hall, looking everywhere for him. Admin. were poised to call the school police when I happened to swing by my office and there he sat in the corner, curled into a ball, with his head covered. I tapped his head, and with big eyes, he told me my room was the safest place he knew. When the classroom becomes overwhelming, chaos from family life brings confusion, and life seems to be spiraling out of control, little items like a sand timer to help narrow one's focus, a sequined wall to engage senses, a light-up unicorn to assist with restoring calming breaths, and a weighted stuffed animal for grounding, work wonders.
I strive to build authentic relationships within my school community, and those bonds are strengthened by the feeling of safety and security. The items selected in my list were done so with intentionality because I always want to create/be one of the safest places they know.
