This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the end of the year I want my students to believe that science is a way of thinking about and questioning the world - not just a subject in school. I want my students to view themselves as scientists, drawing on experiences with real tools answering authentic questions.

My students are a group of vibrant and incredibly diverse learners.

We are a Title 1 school, where the students face the great challenges that come with poverty. Our science class is a safe space where students can celebrate success, take risks, develop teamwork skills, and value learning. My students respond extremely well to hands-on learning opportunities and teacher demonstrations where they feel like they are getting an authentic education.

My Project

My students will use these materials to engage in hands-on scientific processes that align with the Utah State Core Curriculum. With these materials my students will be able to gather evidence for chemical reactions and test conditions that alter reaction rates. Students will be able to work in groups to dissect a model organism for understanding body systems and how they work together. Students will also get to perform investigations that link several topics together, like electromagnetic energy and minerals, which will help them realize content we learn in class is connected to bigger scientific principles.

These materials will help science leap off of the page and into the students' hands.

Through inquiry, they will foster curiosity and problem solving skills. School is the main avenue my students to have these explorations and experiences that might influence them to pursue careers in science and health fields. The authentic practices will break down barriers of "who science is for" and "what a scientists looks like."
