My Students

"Oh no, come on Ms. D.!" These are the best words a teacher can hear, as she tells her students they are done reading the class novel for the day. Hearing students cry out of frustration because they "can't wait to read what happens" next in a story, brings joy to a teacher's ears. Our school serves students in grades six through eight and provides them an engaging and enlightening education to prepare them for their futures.

Many of our students are first-generation Americans or are bilingual students whose parents and teachers work everyday to ensure their children's success in school.

My students are filled with imagination, creativity and a pure wonder about the world. Even with the sensitive nature of their age, they teach me daily about compassion for others. They approach their learning with a passion and dedication and I strive as their teacher to provide them with every bit of assistance I can, to better their future.

My Project

Reading is a skill. The only way to get better at reading is to read—this holds true for excellent readers as well as reluctant readers. It is a proven fact that children will read if they are given relevant, engaging texts in which they are interested.

Research shows that availability of books is a major motivating factor in getting kids to read.

Students who are surrounded by books at school and at home read more. Students who read more, read better. I have found that having my own classroom library has dramatically increased the amount of reading my students do.

The books I have selected are of genres that are lacking in our current classroom library. I have selected popular books in biography, historical fiction, and books that empower girls to code. These books will give my students more opportunities to explore new genres, authors, and topics.
