My Project
Video games and social media have taken over what use to be a child's time to build their imagination by playing outside with friends or reading a good book. Children can sometimes feel as though reading is boring and would rather be doing anything else. Well, this way of thinking does not apply to my class. They have a love for reading that I have not seen in a long time. In fact, they would rather read during their free time than to play the learning games that I have laid out for them.
Graphic novels help to ignite my students love for reading!
In a time where reading for fun is in direct competition with electronic devices, I have found graphic novels to be the solution. My students' look for graphic novels in my class library, but due to the limited amount that I have, they have to wait for a book to become available. I love seeing my students interested in reading for entertainment, therefore I want to provide as many titles for them as I can to keep that fire burning.
The effects of reading more for entertainment can be felt in other subject areas too. My students are becoming better writers as a result of reading more. They have more background knowledge to draw upon when they are being asked to connect what they are doing to a text that they have read. Graphic novels help to improve the use of dialogue in their narrative essays, which is an indicator on the state writing test. Providing my students with more graphic novels in our class library not only ignites their love for reading, but also gives them a chance to be better writers as well.
