We are one of five all-girl public schools in New York City with students ranging from 6th to 12th grade. Our goal is to create the great thinkers of tomorrow through academic rigor and high expectations that empower our young women to strive to do their best. The ultimate goal is to help these young women attend and excel in college. As a title I school we provide free lunch for our young women. The students are motivated and dedicated young women from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in South Jamaica Queens.
Our students enter our walls at different educational starting points, ranging from students who can barely speak, read, or write English to eighth graders already writing essays at a twelfth grade level.
This diverse mix of students in both ethnicity and academic needs provide for a complicated learning environment. We enthusiastically tackle that challenge everyday by providing a plethora of engaging learning experiences!
My Project
These electronic kindle fire tablets will be used daily as a way to support our learners in the multiple ways. They will provide supplementary leveled readings in the vast array of U.S. History topics by giving them access to a digital library for their research papers. They will also have access to educational websites that support their learning such as Edmodo and Google Classroom. We have begun to transition our classroom into a more digital environment. These tablets will provide the opportunity for those students who struggle to listen to audio forms of documents, and those who crave a challenge, to have access rigorous primary sources and enrichment projects.
With these tablets they will be able to engage in the material in new ways and strengthen their reading, writing and critical thinking skills.
