Ignite Reading with an Amazon Fire!

My Students

"To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." ~ Victor Hugo I want to ignite a love of reading in my students. By using Fire tablets confidence will be sparked and success experienced through reading on level books - books we could never afford in hard copy.

Our school is designated a high poverty school.

Most of my students come from low income, single parent homes. The parents are busy working to provide basic needs. Some do not even have transportation. They do not take family vacations or even day trips. My students get little real world experience. My students are innately curious about the world around them. They are constantly asking questions and seeking answers. The pages of the few leveled informational texts in our classroom library have become worn this year as curious students have explored them. Their thirst for knowledge and magical answers to their questions may be quenched through the hundreds of available online books.

My Project

I plan to use these requested 10 Amazon Fire E-Readers during independent reading to guide student learning. I would also like to allow students to check them out for home usage during distance learning in order to read at home while libraries are closed. Students can also use them to access many other online educational resources.. My students are continually asking questions. I allow these questions to guide student learning. Brain research shows that students will retain information they find most interesting. I always do mini-lessons during this portion of our reading block. I will do several weeks worth of mini-lessons(even while distance teaching) on questioning and finding the answers in informational texts found online using these tablets. The students will then take the questions they have and find the answers in the virtual texts. The students will be allowed to present the information in a way they choose. Because they have chosen the texts, guided their learning with their questions, and researched the answers with on-level, high interest texts, I know they will learn.

The donation of these Amazon Fire tablets will allow my students the opportunity to read many of the wonderful books offered online either from home or at school.

It will spark a love of reading in my students and allow them access to books while at school or while social distancing at home. As 21st century learners, they can continue to develop an understanding of technology while igniting a love for reading using these Fire tablets. They will realize that reading can "light-up" their world by flaming their innate curiosity, igniting their confidence as readers, and sparking a passion for learning.
