This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember when you had to get a book to read and it was either worn out or the pages where torn? Let's face it, we all wanted to get the book that was new or hardly used. This is what my students are encountering, but in my case we don't even have grade level books for 6th graders to read.
I teach language arts and history to about 50 6th graders.
We are a Title 1 school where my students get free lunch meals. Our school is in its 2nd year of having 6th grade classes. With budget cuts, our school is very limited, getting simple supplies such as glue, pencils, etc. are hard to get. My students are energetic, but when it comes to reading some of my students need more practice. Some are below grade level, some are second language learners and others have difficulty comprehending what they just read, and the rest are not really interested in reading. They want to get on the computers instead. That is what is motivating my class, having a chance to use the 2 computers in my classroom.
My Project
What better way to ignite their learning than by using technology and connecting it to literature? I want them to be excited about reading a book. With a Kindle Fire I wouldn't have to keep reordering books because they are torn or worn out. With a Kindle Fire, once the book is downloaded, it's for life and the students can read the books THEY like. They wouldn't have to wait for someone else to finish it or find out it's not available at the local library or wait for the school to order new books. With a touch of their finger, they can download the books of their choice. This technology would definitely motivate my students to want to read more and put more effort in their school work.
Having a Kindle Fire will allow me to hopefully help the students who are struggling with reading and hopefully get them where they need to be.
My goal is to get Kindles for my class. My students are in an era where they are growing up in a technological world that our school hasn't caught up with. I want my student to be able to survive in any classroom once they graduate and not fall behind. With your support and donations you, can help me make this happen.
