Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Kofi Annan once said that "Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope..." My 4th grade students face challenges that no 9 year old should have to face. My school is a Title 1 Elementary School in Greenville, South Carolina. 100% of my students are on free or reduced lunch. Each one of my students has a story that involves overcoming the odds. My class is 60% Hispanic, 35% African American and 5% White. I have a culturally diverse class and therefore need a culturally diverse library.
My Project
A culturally diverse library is the vehicle necessary to exposing my students to knowledge they can use to fight their circumstances with the power of an education. My students deserve access to a world of books in our classroom library that will provide stories and role models with characters that they can relate to.
It is my belief that with the right tools, my students will do what it takes to beat the odds, defy the statistics, and embrace the world of education and all it has to offer.
It is my aim to use these books to plant seeds of hope and reassure my students that education is a key that unlocks the doors of opportunity and future success.
