Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first grade students are native Cantonese speakers that develop high levels of English and home language proficiency and literacy, as well as high levels of academic competency in Cantonese. Most of my students come from immigrant families where English is their second language, as well as students who are qualified for Special Education services. As a school, we have limited funding for supplies and academic materials.

Our students come from all walks of life - ready to learn and thrive in an academic setting.

Our school community is a wonderful and safe place to ask questions, explore, and share. As an educator, I hope to provide all students with the best learning experiences as possible to be confident in reading, writing, and exploring using high-quality materials that every student deserves.

My Project

In first grade, there is so much to do and learn. They have a growing sense of independence through reading by choosing a variety of books they like to read. Many of my students are English Language learners that come from immigrant families who do not have sufficient knowledge of English to read and teach their kids at home. They struggle everyday learning how to read. Having updated and high-quality books that students from many diverse populations can have access to read is a basic and fundamental need to allow students to succeed.

As a new teacher, I am hoping to start the year with a classroom library full of high-quality books that are at first grade level to reflect the multilingual group of children who occupies our classroom.

Our titles include: The Giving Tree, Charlotte's Web, The Snowy Day, books from Dr. Suess and more.

Ultimately, my goal is to encourage my students to develop a love for reading, and to build a culture of learning where students can thrive in the classroom setting. Your donations would truly mean a lot for my students who are learning English and Cantonese in my classroom, and will promote a lifelong love of reading for each and every one of my first graders.
