Igbo/Nigerian Research for Chinua Achebe Project

My students need research and art supply materials related to the Igbo people of Nigeria, their culture and history, as they research Chinua Achebe's masterpiece THINGS FALL APART.

My Students

My students reflect the cultural richness of New York City - and they speak 34 different languages among them!

Our school is an academically rigorous, tuition-free high school and college associate's degree program.

Many of my students are the first in their families to attend college. They are very eager for the opportunity to earn two years of free college tuition at the time of their high school graduation.

It is incredibly rewarding to work with such curious, eager and motivated students.

My Project

As the librarian of the school, I enjoy collaborating with teachers on research projects. This spring, a 9th grade English teacher asked me to prepare resources related to the novel THINGS FALL APART by Chinua Achebe. I was disappointed to realize that our library's books on the topic were quite limited, but we managed to get by with online resources. However, we need good old-fashioned books to bring the subject matter alive!

I want to prepare for next year by creating a new collection of books on Nigerian art, history, and culture.

I want to support all learning styles by making art and informational texts available. When students are studying a culture's arts and crafts, in particular, they learn the most through paging through texts and looking at images. When students are trying to understand village life in Africa and the customs of the people, they will greatly benefit from comparing different information sources--not just clicking on websites. If we have an abundant book collection, I expect that all five of the 9th-grade classes will participate in this research project next year. We are also requesting art supplies for our interactive final projects.

This rich, immersive research experience will help students gain a new appreciation for African history, culture, and art while finding deeper meaning in Chinua's masterpiece.

Students will write research essays, creative writing pieces, and children's books, and may also do PowerPoint presentations for their classmates. It will be a deeply meaningful experience with the addition of books. One of the best parts of this project is the way it encourages collaboration. I was heartened to see students helping each other with research questions and brainstorming. Thank you for keeping the spirit of research alive!
