This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school, and despite the high poverty, over 95% free and reduced lunch, and language barriers, our students come to school with smiles on their faces and are eager to learn and take advantage of new learning opportunities and experiences.
Our students come to us primarily from Central and South America.
Many of them do not speak English upon entering our school. As English Learners, not only do they have the daunting task of learning English just to get by in the world, but be able to learn the same math, science and social studies and literature that all students are required to learn.
Help me give our students hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to create life experiences.
My Project
The experiences and real-life connections our students will be able to make on this field trip in STEM are so vastly different than what we can provide in a classroom. Through this trip, we can unleash students’ unlimited creative imagination, enrich their activities in STEM, and increase/improve kinesthetic learning. In order to help engage our 6th graders, we are looking to take them to iFly indoor skydiving. This STEM field trip will engage students in learning across all contents areas. With the field trip fresh in their minds, we will build off their enthusiasm as the we return to school and enter our testing season.
Students in 6th grade will be given the opportunity to soar into science, through an iFly indoor skydiving experience that integrates science, technology, engineering, math, and literacy.
Students will learn about STEM-related careers, how STEM is used in the real world and the effects of different forces on objects. Students will learn to plan investigations and define variables in an experiment, all while measuring and recording data. Our learners will walk away being able to interpret that data and write about it.
