Each Spring, as part of the New York State Social Studies Curriculum, our fourth graders explore the topic of immigration. What better learning experience then to visit the first sight of America that, an estimated, 100 million immigrants saw on the horizon as they began their new lives in America.
Our students live in a low income neighborhood of New York.
Their parents are unable to provide them with wonderful cultural learning experiences like this trip because of work, lack of money or both. With the New York City budget cuts that keep affecting the schools and our students, more and more extracurricular activities are being removed from our school.
My Project
We are requesting tickets for our students to visit Ellis Island and Liberty Island. Our students will be able to see what they have read in their textbooks and in other resources come to life in front of their very eyes. Being able to walk around the base of the Statue of Liberty and walk the halls that millions of immigrants walked in search of a better life is the best way to teach American history to our students.
Our students work tirelessly throughout the school year not only learning the curriculum, but also preparing for the New York State exams.
We would love to be able to bring our 210 fourth graders to experience a wonderful and exciting adventure right in their own backyards.
