If You Must Label Me- Make It Productive

My students need the label makers and sewing machine to increase vocational skills and to create real life work experiences that teach independence and responsibility.

My Students

Can you remember a time when you were little and you thought about your future? What will I be? What will I do? ... a lawyer, doctor or even a teacher. My students do not have the ability to ponder those questions but yet they need to have certain skills in order to succeed in life.

I work in a NYC DOE District 75 school, meaning all of the students are severely disabled, either physically or intellectually.

It is a high school/ occupational training center which is solely geared toward post graduation (21 years old). All of my students are classified as having autism, some more severe than others. But I see potential in every one of them. They have their own personalities and idiosyncrasies as any other human being. I do my best to bring out the best in each one. This year my students are between 15 and 17 years old. As I think about their future, I want to provide them with as many opportunities as I can to create a greater level of independence and sense of responsibility so they can be employable when they graduate.

My Project

I am asking Epson and the generous people who subscribe to this website to help make my vision a reality. My students are mostly limited by their cognitive ability; that is, they don't necessarily know "why" they are doing something, but they are more than physically able to do most anything- filling envelopes, pairing socks, washing dishes, and cleaning tables. I want to offer them more useful and functional skills to become efficient in. By giving my students new skills, I am opening up more opportunities for their future. The reason I chose label makers is because my school is a very big school with a need for organizational management. I felt this program would be useful to meet that need. I requested a sewing machine, fabric, and thread because sewing is a functional need that would give my students a skill that they might never know. The Epson company is willing to partially fund projects that include their products and I thank them in advance for consideration of this project.

This project is so important to my students because it provides skills that they will need when they are ready for employment.

Any opportunity and skill can only enhance their chance to become more independent in their lives after graduation. I again, thank Epson for their consideration and generosity.
