Hello! I am a kindergarten teacher in a wonderful school in Durham, North Carolina. Many of our students come from low-income homes, and they are some of the sweetest, smartest, and most dedicated students you will ever find! One of the most important things we teach in Kindergarten is helping our students learn to read, as well as fostering a lifelong love of reading. One of the ways that we help instill this knowledge is by using guided reading and literacy centers. In guided reading a teacher meets with a small group of students to work on their reading skills. While the teacher is working with a few students, the remainder of the class is working in literacy centers. These could vary from silent reading to writing to letter practice. One of the most important centers is our listening center. Study after study has shown that the most effective way to prepare children to read is by reading aloud to them. Since it is impossible to read to a group of children while I'm working with another group the answer is simple: a listening center! At our listening center, students have the opportunity to listen to books or complete different assignments. The Readers Literacy Pack form Lakeshore Learning provides 12 stories on tape, plus additional activities to compliment what is being taught in each book. Some of the skills this series is designed to target are concepts about print, short vowel sounds, decoding of new words, reading high frequency words, recognizing vocabulary in context, reading fluency, and active listening. The Math Activities Pack is designed to target specific math skills that students are studying. There are tapes and activities for addition, subtraction, creating and extending patterns, analyzing data in graphs, linear measurement, counting to 10, using logic/solving word problems, and recognizing shapes. These two sets could provide and entire years worth of curriculum support for these students. And they would love it!!! One of the most important parts of being a kindergarten teacher is keeping learning fun and exciting so students want to come back everyday. Thank you for helping me with this task.
