My project needs 25 copies of 'The Wish Giver' by Bill Brittain. It is a wonderfully told story for my grade 5 class, and it not only affords an in-depth character study for the children but is written in wonderful descriptive language.
I am a fifth grade teacher at P.S. 60 (The Alice Austen School), located in Staten Island (S.I.), New York. P.S. 60 is centrally located in S.I., and because of its geographic setting, gets many children from various parts of the Island.
I came across "The Wish Giver" this summer when I was reading it with one of my own children. It is a wonderful book with very descriptive language that delves into the lives of young children from a small town. These children meet a "wish giver" at a carnival and he had promised that for 50 cents, he will grant them one wish. The only stipulation is that they have to be certain what they are wishing for, because it is irreversible.
I plan on using the book as a shared reading in my classroom, to stimulate the children in two ways: 1) to have them brainstorm some things that they would like to have, and 2) to put a value on their wanting of those items. I want them to use this book as a platform to discuss their feelings and beliefs, as for many of my students, open discussion is not always easy.
I would appreciate you considering funding my proposal. Thank you.
