My Students
Kindergarten is a year full of self-discovery, social and emotional development, academic growth, and everything in between. My students come in with all different backgrounds of education, levels of learning, and home languages are spoken.
My first job is to make students feel comfortable, and then the learning follows.
When students have set routines and know their expectations they are more likely to find comfort in their classroom and succeed emotionally and academically.
The growth that kindergarteners make, across all areas, from August to June continues to amaze me year after year.
My Project
A day in kindergarten starts on the rug, transitions on the rug, and ends on the rug. A classroom rug becomes the meeting spot for launching new learning, sharing ideas, and listening to stories being read aloud.
On a classroom rug, each student has their own spot to listen, learn, and share.
Students turn and talk to their partners constantly to engage in small conversations. When we are on the rug as a whole class students get to share out their thoughts and ideas, and can even lead the discussion in front of their peers. They quickly learn about personal space, boundaries, and staying within those limits.
Having a great classroom meeting place makes it easier to set clear expectations and implement a daily routine.
