My students would greatly benefit from a classroom set of big books.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Kohls's classroom raised $707
This project is fully funded
I teach first grade students who attend a Title 1 school in a high-need community of Seattle, WA.
The students in my literacy group are not reading yet. We are learning sight words and phonics. The students would really benefit from your help.
Why big books?
They are large sized books with large print and large pictures that started as tools for teaching reading. For a classroom teacher, big books may be a magnified version of the reading text the students are using. Beginning readers have an easier time following the words while not having to deal with holding a book. Big books have big words and big pictures, so there is a high interest factor. Big books create a focal point for the lesson.
Integration of subjects shows children how the real world works. Reading is not separate from other tasks. Big books are user-friendly. The teacher reads the page to the students. Some children will choose to read along; some will just follow along.
Key repetitive phrases encourage speaking participation.
A big book lesson appeals to a variety of learning styles.
Big Book subjects can be activity-based.

May reinforce skill themes.
Offer a new format for practice & exploration.
Your help will stimulate learning through seeing, hearing, and doing. It will also reinforce skill themes, allow us to be a literacy model, and add more fun to our program!
