Creating Oil Paintings for a Powerful College Portfolio

Help me give my students oil paint sets so they can create traditional as well as contemporary artworks for college scholarships and competitions.

My Students

My students are incredibly talented and part of a Career Technical Educational School in New York City. Many have won awards and have exhibited their artworks in corporations and/or museums. A lot of students travel long distances to attend our school and many are from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Despite distance and economic challenges, my students are passionate about creativity and want to learn all aspect of art making.

They are willing to practice every day for the opportunity to culminate employability skills and post-secondary degrees.

My Project

I had a student who learned how to oil paint in junior year, and in senior year she began creating a body of work unified by a central idea or theme.

Because her work consisted of oil paintings, a medium she learned through regular practice in my class, she won major awards including Public School Art, an exhibition at the Ruth and Harold D.

Uris Center for Education at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I want my current students to learn oil painting skills and enter competitions as well; however, oil paints are expensive and it’s only fair that students in my class (27 total) learn how to use the medium and not just the privileged few. Therefore, I am hoping to acquire enough supplies to begin teaching my entire class the process of oil painting so when they become seniors, they could develop a strong portfolio for college scholarships as well as competitions.
