My students need pointers and a variety of engaged puzzles that they can utilize independently during language arts to apply and practice the phonemic awareness and phonics skills I teach daily.

My Students
Our existing classroom learning materials are weathered and worn from years of daily use!! The pointers are broken and some puzzle pieces have run away!!
My kindergarteners attend a public school in a large urban city in California.
Year after year, the school district has faced severe budget cuts due to the downed economy. However, the size of my kindergarten classroom has increased steadily. Kindergarteners learn best by doing. They are eager to manipulate learning materials independently to practice and apply early literacy skills because the learning is fun! With so many small hands utilizing learning materials, the time has come to replace aged learning tools to improve the learning experience for my students this academic year.
My Project
My kindergarteners need pointers to "Read the Room." They are excited and highly motivated to move about the room with peers if they are able to point and read the print in their environment. With the pointers, they are able to directly point and touch words out of their usual reach. Moreover, the existing puzzles are extremely weathered and worn. Puzzles that help students recognize and sequence the alphabet and build high frequency words or rhyming words are incomplete. Many of the pieces are lost or have been torn from years of daily use.
The pointers and puzzles are important learning materials in a kindergarten classroom.
They help to keep students engaged and motivated to practice and apply early literacy skills. These materials are used daily to enhance students' phonemic awareness, phonics and reading skills.
More than half of students from low‑income households
