My Project
Help my students see themselves as heroes! I'm requesting a class set of 25 copies of Ghost, a National Book Award finalist written by Jason Reynolds, the award-winning author of All American Boys.
As I previewed my district's new ELA curriculum, I wondered how to make Greek mythology more interesting to my sixth-grade students, and I immediately thought of this novel's main character, Castle Cranshaw (aka Ghost), whose challenges will provide my students their own idea of a hero on an epic journey.
Another challenge I faced was how to include novel studies into a curriculum that focuses more on excerpts than whole-novel lessons. This novel is accessible to my students not only in its reading level and language, but also in its themes of trauma, resilience, and teamwork. If my students can see themselves in Ghost, they too can be heroes in their own lives.
