My students need an interactive block set with 70 pieces to practice interpersonal communication skills and learn geometric shapes along with prepositions.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have many second language learners from high poverty households in need of the best education to make them as successful as middle class and higher economic students. I believe in promoting their beginning interpersonal communication with simple commands like, "Let's go to the blocks!" or "I want to play with Imagination Playground." Can't you see the excitement the students will exhibit to others while playing interactively with blocks using language activities and enjoying learning?
As my assistant and I teach reading groups and individualize their learning needs, I would like to see my other students building with blocks, using prepositions and geometric shapes in their sentences.
I have refugee students from other countries and so practicing solving problems using academic language in the class would be beneficial. Working toward a common goal by inserting geometrical shapes and practicing their English will make my students fluent. I could have a block center set up for some of the students to go to while I differentiate learning. . Using words like, "please, thank you, May I have, or pass the ___. Let's put this block on or under a..." Socially literate students in the community...This would help our students immensely.
My Project
My students struggle learning the three dimensional names of geometric shapes, however if I have them using the academic vocabulary every day, they might pick the names up quicker. These real objects used in play will bring geometric shape learning into my classroom while promoting problem solving skills, developing language and manners along with it.
Children manipulating objects and speaking about positions of the foam blocks will improve their competencies in the English language as well as using their imagination.
Future engineers, construction workers, architects, managers, and problem solvers at work daily, while never becoming bored. Clean up time will be a disappointment, but there is always tomorrow to build something new.
