If You Build It...

Help me give my students STEM materials to help build up their creativity!

My Project

Building a structure, whether with blocks, magnet tiles, or a marble run, will certainly give my students an opportunity to expand and exhibit their creativity. The children can build a town, a castle, a mansion, a school, etc. with these magnet tiles. Along with these materials, students will also have little mini figures that they can incorporate into their buildings. They can create a story with the mini figures such as a construction crew, or building their own school, a house with various family members, or a hospital with the magnet tiles. There are endless stories they can come up with as they plan and play together. Sometimes they mimic real life issues and problems and connect it to their play. This helps them "talk it out" when trying to deal with sometimes real social situations.

The children will also learn to work cooperatively with their peers in a fun activity.

These materials will be used during our free choice activity time, twice a week, and can even be utilized during rainy day recess. Learning through play is important in first grade. Working and playing cooperatively are vital in teaching young children lifelong social skills.

Lastly, the marble run materials will definitely challenge them to build a structure that will need multiple connections with problem-solving techniques. The marble run is a great activity for first graders to think creatively and plan out accordingly with other peers. One student may have a particular technique for building that another student may not have thought of. Another point of view will help students learn from each other.
