My Students
Our students come from hard-working families who don't always have a lot of money. They're good kids who want to learn! I'm proud to say that, despite our challenges, parents in other areas of our city send their children to us because they know we have a learning environment here.
I'd like to see my students begin to experiment with trial and error a little more, and I think hands-on building is a great place to start.
When you get to build something, see if it works, and then you make necessary adjustments to make it work better you feel successful. If we can get that feeling during recess and Fun Friday time, I can make that a 'teachable moment' and refer back to it during our more strictly academic tasks of Reading, Writing, and Math.
My Project
Okay, so the movie quote is a little off, but I thought it was catchy. We ended up having quite a few indoor recess days this year - rain, snow on the playground, testing around the school so we couldn't play outside for fear of distracting test takers - and my existing Lego set was a big hit! That said, my existing Lego set are my Legos from when I was a kid. They're a little beat up and very mixed up and somehow there really aren't very many actual Lego pieces to build with left in the box. That is why I'm asking for a general supplement of generic pieces they can use to combine with my existing set of...whatevers.
The Magnatiles were recommended to me by a first grade teacher in our building who did a DonorsChoose,org project for them years ago.
I'd like to be able to offer my students options - we all like options! - when it comes to building materials for indoor recess. I've also been in contact with an architecture program that is planning on coming in next year to work with my students in the spring. I'm sure the tiles and Legos can be put to use in there somewhere too!
