My students need 5 sets of "Bluford Series" books that relate to real life issues that many of them face. These books will be used in conjunction with their classroom emotional management course.
How do you get kids with extreme emotional distress issues to open up and talk about past experiences or what exactly makes them angry? I've found in my classroom of fourth graders that music, movies, and books have been the key to unlocking much of the emotional distress in our students.
My students are all fourth graders who have severe emotional and academic needs.
Many have anger control issues and struggle with controlling themselves physically and emotionally. Many students struggle with opening up about what the underlying issue for their anger is. It can be extremely challenging and we are always looking for ways to aid the students in their emotional struggles.
My Project
I am requesting 5 sets of Bluford Series books that relate to real life issues that many of them face. The Bluford Series is a well known book series whose main characters are in urban settings and deal with real life issues that my students face, have faced, or sadly may face in the future. In our school we spend a great amount of time helping our students to overcome their past adversaries and move on to a better place in life. Many times my students cannot relate to characters in a book, but with the help of the Bluford series, I'm hoping my students will begin to open up in group conversation and see how the character worked to overcome the problem. If one child can relate to a character's empowerment and will to overcome then maybe I will see more leadership and self confidence in my students.
This project makes a difference because the Bluford books are something that many inner city students can relate to.
I think that, in my classroom, through the use of the Bluford series, I can help my students to overcome their past inner conflicts and move on to be successful and self sufficient on their educational path.
